The inter-relations between demographic trends and the environment have been recognized for several decades, including formally in the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, which noted the interdependence and complementarity of slower population growth with poverty eradication, economic development, and the adoption of sustainable consumption and production patterns. The outcome document of the International Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) also links the trends in the world population with the sustainable development of urban and rural areas, the eradication of poverty, hunger and preventable diseases. The Population Division produces datasets on Population, Resources, Environment and Development (PRED) and wall charts with selected indicators on the urban and rural population and environmental conditions.
